Washington Slagbaai National Park - VISITOR CENTER - MUSEUM

The museum, with its six exhibits offers the visitor a very complete view of Bonaire, from Jurassic times until today.

History of Bonaire

Learn about the most important events on Bonaire’s history since the first human presence on the island around 3000 years ago until the 21st Century. The time line runs parallel for Bonaire and the rest of the world, therefore allowing you to compare the development of historic events. The objects displayed, as well as the images, help you place yourself back in the time of the events.

From Plantation to National Park

Meet the people involved in the first steps taken on the Netherlands Antilles toward conservation of areas exclusively for nature. Bonaire, despite being the “little sister” of the ABC islands, leaded the way in environmental protection since the early sixties and became an example for the world.

Terrestrial Flora & Fauna

Find the real “natives” of Bonaire and learn in detail about their characteristics. Bonaire has quite a few endemic species (can be found only on this island) for such a small oceanic island, all these species can be found in the museum. Important information regarding the island ecosystem and how it is affected by exotic species is also available for the visitor.

Life in the Plantations

Discover how life was on Bonaire after slavery was abolished, but before tourism was developed. The homes, the food, the celebrations, the music and other aspects of the true Bonairean life are shown on this exhibit. This exhibit has an outdoor component where you can see among others an aloe oven, how charcoal was made and how lime was obtained from coral rubble.

Geology of Bonaire

Did you know Bonaire did not exist when the Dinosaurs walked around this planet, nor even when they disappeared forever? This and other facts about the volcanic origins of Bonaire and its geological formations can be learned in this exhibit.

Archaeology in Bonaire

Find out how the Bonairean past is discovered, and also what was discovered, through this interesting and mysterious science. Fascinating ancient objects are displayed and Indian rock paintings are interpreted for your enjoyment.
